Water Canyon, Nevada

If we could, we would put every single one of the pictures that we took today on this blog--they are all really unbelievable!

We got up this morning to take on a rather huge challenge. We wandered up the road to the mountain that shadowed our campsite. It was Water Canyon Mountain. Looked pretty easy to climb but then about 15 minutes into the hike we were both whining. If you look closely you may be able to see our car at the bottom of the mountain in a parking lot. It was three hours of challenge and great exercise. A funny thing happened at the top of the mountain... by the time we finally made it to the very top, climbing over cactus, treacherous terrain, and choking of the dust, we rounded a huge boulder only to notice a freakin' road that lead up to the top! That is Dennis standing on the road! Who knew?

During that trek we encountered two fine men who were the foundation of the Nevada Outdoorsman in Wheelchairs. Check out the pictures and go to www.nvoutdoorsmen.com to see their great work. They took great patience to set up tents with all the accommodations for the disabled outdoorsmen. They provide the equipment and special gear to welcome those in need to enjoy the outdoors. Nigel and Chad, keep up the great work.

From Salt Lake City to Fallon, to Virginia City, to Reno to LAKE TAHOE!

So, there we were on the range between Fallon and Lake Tahoe, it was dark, the deck was pitching and the sands were blowing hard but we pressed on with some interesting stops on the way.
First, we stopped at the Mustang Ranch to get a t-shirt (ha), no, really we did however, we only bought postcards after the proprietor made us nervous. Norma was propositioned by a customer thinking that she was on the payroll. After all, she was the hottest woman in the place. It was “couples friendly” according to the madam but we were not.
It wasn’t long after that we were driving through downtown Reno to take in the sights. We were headed to the West Nevada State Fair however, it was hot and things were slow so we decided to head out to Virginia City. Virginia City was pretty interesting and a lot of history of silver mining and cowboy kinda stuff.

We sat in the Bucket of Blood Saloon and had a cool one while listening to some lady in chaps ramble on about ghosts that she talked to down the street. Whew!! It was a long beer.

Okay, then on to Carson City. We just happened to have a coupon for a free t-shirt at the Moonlight Bunny Ranch. Of course we were met by a fine covey of candidates but again just getting a t-shirt. Then on to Carson City, a bit of a letdown from Virginia City so it was a pretty quick drive through and on to Lake Tahoe. We entered Lake Tahoe from the east side and drove around the southern tip to the west side where we were to stay aboard the Coast Guard Station in one of their cabins. What a treat! We lucked out by a prior cancellation and enjoyed the stay on the water with a pesky grizzly bear for a guest outside that evening. Can’t say enough about the sights that we saw while driving around the horn. The pictures speak for themselves. The pine cones were the biggest we ever saw and the lake and mountains were majestic and breathtaking.

The next morning we drove down from the Coast Guard Station to Sierra Tahoe Ski Resort. We were going to see our potential winter home. It was a deal that Dennis’ Son hooked us up with. Wow, the slopes were steep and long. So our thoughts after seeing that and the sudden change of temperature that day made us rethink whether we would work outside or inside with the resort. We drove back up to Lake Tahoe and found a room for the night at the Econo-Lodge. It was military friendly and would you believe it also had a fireplace in the room? So the firewood that we didn’t use in Yellowstone got put to good use last night to warm us. It was nice to sleep in a room within five feet of a bathroom and to enjoy a good movie by the firelight.
